So 6 days ago we had the CXF that Josh Jones' fight was cancelled due to his opponent getting injured. Well where one door closes, another one opened and Josh got in a replacement spot for a fight at the Combate Americas show in Ventura the very next Friday that had Emilio Chavez as the main event for the card.
Josh was the first fight of the night. From the start of the fight Josh stuck to the gameplan and threw heavy hands into his takedowns, made his opponent carry his weight and and kept up with smothering relentless ground & pound. After a completely dominant 1st round, it was more of the same in the 2nd with Josh's opponent eventually getting pinned on his knees against the cage eating big punches until referee Frank Trigg called a stop to the fight with less than a minute left in the round.
When it came time for Emilio in the main event, we had a simple game plan — wrestle the opponent down, take the back, body-triangle and submit him. The problem was that Emilio happens to be a wrestler that likes to strike more than he should at times — hunting the KO more than taking the easier win in some fights. We knew Emilio's BJJ was going to be better than his opponent's enough to flowchart the game plan and come out with a submission win if he stuck to it & that's exactly what he did. He came out with a pair of head-kick attempts followed by a single-leg to body-lock transition. Emilio took his opponent down from the body-lock, went immediately to the back, locked the body-triangle and was there for the next couple of minutes until he caught the RNC win. It was a lot like Gabe Green's fight last week.
The funner part about the main event was how rabid the crowd was. Emilio's opponent apparently sold over 300 tickets and we heard it! From the boos while walking out to being cursed out by the crowd after winning and walking back to the fighter area. While me & Gabe were celebrating Emilio's win and walking back, a few women came out of nowhere, flipping us the bird and screaming "fuck you, get the fuck out of here". We laughed it off as there's no real reason to get sour after we just took home another W for the team, but I haven't seen a crown that rabid since Mexicali ~9 years ago!
Bonus picture #1: Yoshi the police dog when police were called in to escort a couple of the cornermen that were beefing and about to fight out of venue.
Bonus picture #2: Alberto El Patron & Paige. (yes, I know I am a wrestling fanboy :P)
