April 2017 - Subfighter NoGi Cage Series Tournament
by Maxamilian Demian on May 3, 2017
So Saturday, I went to Studio City for another CXF MMA show. But that morning, there was an in-house nogi Jiu Jitsu tournament at Adam Lynn's Subfighter MMA in Laguna Hills as well. It was a 3-years experience and under tournament with one big rule difference from other tournament — competitors were allowed to use the cage wall for takedowns in their matches.
I decided to go check out the tournament and kill some time before leaving for Studio City. It wasn't super-packed, but there were at least 3 people in every weight class, making for good round robins where everyone gets at least 2 matches. I definitely like the idea of allowing the cage in a tournament (or walls if that's what the location has available). If you are going to make the transition into MMA, you need to learn cage wrestling as it's a skill unto itself, but outside of MMA where do you get to practice it competitively?
Overall, even though there was still some butt-flopping going on, it was good to see the majority of competitors wrestling and there were a handful of really good cage battles to watch.
