December 2017 - Subfighter Holiday No Gi Challenge
by Maxamilian Demian on Dec 11, 2017
Sunday was the Subfighter Holiday No Gi Challenge at Dana Hills High School in Dana Point, California. We actually didn't have anybody from our gym competing in this tournament as we have so many guys focused on upcoming MMA fights. I went to go coach my friend - black belt Tameem Hamoui - and to hang out with friends as usual.
Tameem was in an 8-man advanced 165lbs bracket. His first match was against a guy from 10th Planet HQ. The first half of the round was both of them playing footsies back and forth going for footlocks. After the match being half-done and the score still being 0-0, Tameem switched his game up and hit a sweep for 2 points. Afterwards he maintained top position for the rest of the match to win 2-0 on points. Not the usual performance you see from Tameem, but at the same time it was his tournament warmup match.
Match two saw Tameem go against another 10th Planet guy (I think non-HQ this time). Tameem pulled full guard and held a tight left overhook. Around a minute later, Tameem's opponent grabbed his shoulder trying to pass as Tameem adjusted his hips and was immediately submitted with a Shiago (Frank Mir/Pete Williams submission).
The final match for first place was ANOTHER 10th Planet guy (not sure which 10p this one was from either). This was another quick one as Tameem sat to butterfly guard and went for a sweep to footlock chain that ended in him winning via kneebar within a couple minutes.
Since Tameem was the only person I was coaching, I got to enjoy the rest of the day watching my friends from other gyms compete. Easy day!
UPDATE FROM MY LAST POST:
In my last post I mentioned one of our guys fighting on Celtic Gladiator 17 last Friday. We needed to leave early at 2pm to make it to the fights and I was slammed with work so I couldn't make it. Hence why there is no post on the event .
