September 2018 - Grappling Industries San Diego
by Maxamilian Demian on Sep 8, 2018
Me & Tameem were back in San Diego for another Grappling Industries tournament.
This time, Tameem was competing in a round-robin advanced division with 3 other competitors.
Match 1: Tameem's opponent takes the top position and is crucifixed and taps to an RNC in ~30 seconds. Not much to explain on this one, lol.
Match 2: This was probably Tameem's toughest match. Tameem's opponent pulls guard and keeps Tameem in his full guard without opening his legs for anything for ~4 minutes. Tameem's opponent goes for a couple of hip-bump sweeps to no avail and eventually with a minute left, tries a hip-bump sweep into a triangle. This missed attempt — mixed with time running out — prompts Tameem's opponent to get to his feet to prevent a guard pass and any scoring. Tameem takes this moment to pull guard instead and locks up a deep shiago submission (Frank Mir/Pete Williams) as the time runs out. Tameem wins this match via ref decision.
Match 3: This match is a lot like the first match, except not nearly as quick. Tameem's opponent takes the top position and ends up getting crucifixed pretty quickly. This one takes Tameem a couple of minutes as his opponent is resilient and almost escapes the position. Eventually Tameem fully commits and goes for the 2-arm RNC from the crucifix position to win the match and to take 1st-place in the tournament.
