Part 1

About to head back home from another weekend of fights in Laughlin. We’ve been taking guys to fight in this show for almost a decade now (my last fight was in March 2008 in this same show). We had hoped to have more guys fighting on the card, but only found match ups for Mario Delgado at middleweight and Fabian at Roa heavyweight.

Speaking of Get Down Fights 17, there were obviously the MMA fights that followed the tournament. I stuck around because a couple of guys I know were fighting in the show. Unfortunately they were fighting each other, but that has to happen sometimes when you are fighting for the championship. It was Albert Lee from Juliano Prado’s Total MMA (and featured previously on this site) vs Sean Datte from Antonio McKee’s Body Shop. The fight was exciting with solid GnP from Sean and a lot of solid submission attempts by Albert.

Back from tonight’s Get Down Fights 17 at the Yost Theater in Santa Ana, CA. There was an 8-man, 180lbs, purple belt+ submission grappling tournament. The matches were in the cage, two 5-minute rounds and sub-only/judges decision. I went to coach Mario Delgado (who is actually still a white belt, but is a very solid wrestler and MMA fighter that is due for his blue belt). He won his first match against a brown belt in a fairly dominant match that surprised even me, then he lost his semi-final match.
