January 2022 - Knockout Fight League
by Maxamilian Demian on Jan 30, 2022
Last night was another Knockout Fight League amateur MMA show in Hawaiian Gardens, CA. This time we had Fred Adams in his first fight in over 3 years along with Subfighter alumni JJ Ambrose protégé - Johnny Arreola - making his debut.
First up was Johnny. Johnny is from California, but is in the Navy and is stationed on Guam. He trains at Steel Athletics with JJ Ambrose and scheduled a visit home along with a fight while he was back. Since his team in on Guam, Gabe Green & myself took on cornering duties.
The first round was close. Both fighters threw a bit of leather. Johnny stuffed every takedown except for one and he quickly stood back up on the successful takedown. His opponent likely took the round on being a bit more active, but we could see that he was starting to wilt and breathe heavy at the end of the first. Between rounds we told Johnny to keep the pressure and his opponent will break. Round 2 started looking a lot like the first. Johnny's opponent landed a takedown early and Johnny again quickly got back to his feet. Johnny's opponent shot again trying to keep Johnny down, but this time got his neck stuck in a guillotine. Johnny got his opponent sitting and pinned against the cage with the guillotine and got the tap for a second-round victory!
Next up was Fred. There's not a ton to say about the fight. It was a 3-round striking affair that Fred lost on points in a decision. Fred didn't gas and wasn't really banged up at all, but he fought a kickboxer that was just a bit more active on the feet. We wanted Fred to wrestle more since his opponent was a striker, but Fred likes to fight on the feet and wanted to keep the fight there. The only problem was that Fred had a bit of a failure to launch in this fight. Every time he threw his left, it landed clean. He just couldn't bring himself to pull the trigger and throw more. It was definitely a winnable fight for him and became a loss due to lack of enough activity. Hopefully this fight is more clearing the 3+ year ring rust for him and he comes back in the next one to smash his opponent.
That was it for us at Knockout Fight League last night, but I will be commentating at True Promotions "True 2" tonight in Anaheim, so there should be more content coming soon!
