So the day after the Knockout Fights, we're in Dana Point for the Subfighter No Gi Spring Challenge. Another hectic tournament for us as usual with over a dozen students competing in kids, womens, mens, beginner, intermediate and advanced. Gabriel Green also had his CSULB film school buddies at the tournament filming for their senior thesis.
The day after Henry fought at Get Down Fights, we are at Subfighter in Laguna for the Subfighter Men’s Nogi Round Robin Classic. Outside of all the butt flopping for foot locks and the one whiney purple belt throwing a baby tantrum after he lost because he accidentally got smacked during a scramble, it was a pretty good day. 6 competitors, 5 medals, didn’t have to ref and got to see old friends again!
In Santa Ana again for the Subfighter Summer No Gi Jiu Jitsu Challenge. Didn’t get as many pictures as I hoped since we had 19 guys competing and Tracy and I were running all over coaching. I think half our guys medaled and either our team or 10th Planet Costa Mesa took the team award (results still had to be tabulated when we left). Missed Dillashaw vs Barao for this tournament!
Back from tonight’s Get Down Fights 17 at the Yost Theater in Santa Ana, CA. There was an 8-man, 180lbs, purple belt+ submission grappling tournament. The matches were in the cage, two 5-minute rounds and sub-only/judges decision. I went to coach Mario Delgado (who is actually still a white belt, but is a very solid wrestler and MMA fighter that is due for his blue belt). He won his first match against a brown belt in a fairly dominant match that surprised even me, then he lost his semi-final match.
